Sadaqah (voluntary charity) holds a elevated status in Islam. It serves as a continuous source of blessings (Barakah) in this world and guarantees eternal rewards in the Next. In Islamic tradition, charity is not restricted to monetary donation alone; sharing a warm smile, removing an obstacle from a walkway, or imparting good counsel are all recognized as acts of Sadaqah.
Virtues of Sadaqah in the Holy Quran
1. Multiplied Wealth and Divine Blessings
Spending for the sake of Allah never diminishes a believer's status; rather, Almighty Allah multiplies the reward exponentially.
"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills."
— (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:261)
2. Freedom from Fear and Grief
Regularly spending in the path of Allah—whether in secret or in public—grants a believer divine protection and peace of mind.
"Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and publicly will find their reward with their Lord. They shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve."
— (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:274)
Virtues of Sadaqah in Authentic Ahadith
1. Charity Does Not Diminish Wealth
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) reassured the Ummah regarding their financial giving:
"Charity does not decrease wealth in the slightest."
— (Sahih Muslim: 2588)
2. Protection Against Calamities
Giving secretly calms divine anger and shields a person against sudden trials and bad endings.
"Secret charity extinguishes the wrath of the Lord and shields against an evil death."
— (Sunan Tirmidhi: 664)
3. Divine Shade on Judgment Day
On a day when no shelter exists except the shade of the Almighty's Throne, a sincere donor will be protected under it:
Among the seven shaded groups is "a person who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given."
— (Sahih Bukhari: 660, Sahih Muslim: 1031)
4. Sadaqah Jariyah (Ongoing Charity)
Acts of charity that provide continuous benefit to humanity generate endless rewards long after death:
"When a person dies, all their deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity), beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them."
— (Sahih Muslim: 1631)
